What is MORE?

MORE is THE elementary science and social studies program that builds schemas and improves academic achievement including literacy and math!

A joyful girl with curly hair smiles while reaching out with a green marker. She is wearing a red shirt and sitting at a classroom desk surrounded by colorful school supplies and books. In the background, a teacher is helping students.

We believe all kids should laugh and love playing with language.

Three Flexible Tools

MORE (model of reading engagement) is designed to fit into and adapt to unique classroom schedules. Teachers use these three tools flexibly to get their students reading, writing, and discussing complex - and exciting! - science and social studies topics.

A teacher with long, curly hair in a red top and orange skirt is standing beside a large open book, talking to three children. The children include a boy with dark hair in a purple shirt, a girl in a striped top and purple skirt, and a boy in a blue shirt and cap. Green leaves frame the background, creating a lively and inviting atmosphere.

Thematic Units

MORE includes 30 lessons each year in first, second, and third grades:

  • 15 science lessons

  • 15 social studies lessons

At the heart of each lesson, you'll find:

  • Concept mapping

  • Equitable discussion routines

Digital Activities

MORE digital activities are designed to foster transfer to students' meta-linguistic abilities, including:

  • Word recognition skills

  • Language comprehension skills

We want kids to laugh and love playing with language!

Formative Assessments

Model of Reading Engagement's formative assessments of transfer measure how far students can transfer the knowledge they have acquired from the MORE lessons and digital activities, and apply that knowledge to different topics.

LEARN MORE

MORE is backed by science.

We have the highest level of evidence you can get. But that doesn't mean MORE (model of reading engagement) was cooked up in a lab. Instead of white coats and sterile equipment, imagine kids laughing, anchor charts messy with hand-written ideas, and teachers engaged in class discussions. Imagine people who care deeply about building proficient readers who know how to recognize words and are curious to know more about the world around them.

A group of four people are sitting at a table in a library, engaged in a friendly conversation while looking at a laptop. One person wears glasses and has curly hair, another is in a bright orange sweater, and a third is smiling with long hair. Behind them, there are bookshelves filled with colorful books, and the space is bright and welcoming.A group of people is engaged in a creative activity around a large table in a bright room. Two women are working closely together; one is drawing on a large sheet of paper while the other assists. There are various colorful shapes and tools spread across the table, suggesting a collaborative project. In the background, more people are interacting and observing. The atmosphere is lively and focused.

That’s the Model of Reading Engagement (MORE). It’s a teacher-researcher developed science and social studies curriculum that causes lasting improvements in elementary students' reading outcomes. And it works – we've got the science to prove it.

What do teachers say about MORE?

“One thing that people might not realize is that MORE also provides many strategies that can be used outside of the MORE units, and we use them all year long. For example, concept mapping and adding structure to student discussions.”
